Newcastle Livesites – October 2004

Wheeler Place will become the domain of rockabilly grooves and 1950s car clubbers with Rockers and Revheads taking command every Friday evening in October, from 5pm to 9pm.

The latest instalment of the Newcastle Live Sites program will see jive dance classes, local rockabilly outfits and fanatical classic car enthusiasts converge on the space to bring family evenings of fun, dance and nostalgia.

Creepers, full-circle skirts, hair wax for the quiff, and the desire to dance the night away are all highly encouraged elements of this free family event.

Each night will kick off with free dance lessons from local professional instructors, to the sounds of well-loved rockabilly bands, who will then proceed to groove the night away.

Elvis himself will make an appearance, re-living some of his greatest hits and awarding prizes to the best-dressed dancers.

Rockabilly numbers will be provided by The Pat Capocci Combo, Wes Pudsey and the Sonic Aces and The Retro Rockets. Adding to the atmosphere will be a visual feast of cars from California Cruising and the Howlers Hotrod Club, featuring Pontiacs, Chevrolets and Ford Roadsters.

Newcastle Live Sites is a free cultural events program taking place in public spaces in the heart of Newcastle to enliven and activate the civic precinct. The program is jointly funded by the Newcastle Alliance, the Honeysuckle Development Corporation, the Newcastle City Council and the NSW Ministry for the Arts.
