1233 ABC Newcastle Presents a Five Star Event for the Fifth Year of the Music Awards

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

1233 Newcastle Music AwardsMyf Warhurst, best known for her roles as team leader on ABC Television’s Spicks and Specks program and as Triple J’s Lunchtime presenter, will be stepping into the spotlight for yet another role with 1233 ABC Newcastle’s very own Breakfast presenter Brett Lavaring.

Join Myf and Brett as they reward the Hunter and Central Coast’s finest musicians at this year’s prestigious 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards, Civic Theatre Newcastle on Friday October 20 2006. Awards presented will include ABC Music Best Artist and the ABC Music Publishing and APRA Songwriter and Composer Recognition Award.

The Awards Night promises a sensational stage show ranging from the extremes of an explosive rock band, to the sounds of a gritty blues guitarist, to a quartet of keyboards playing a pop track. The stage will be set alight with a fusion of sounds, colour and dance from locally and nationally recognised musical talent. We are pleased to include the following artists in this first announcement …

Please welcome Adelaide 5 piece ‘The Audreys‘ to Newcastle who are currently creating a stir Australia wide with their debut album ‘Between Us and Last Night‘ (released ABC Roots/Warner Music). Featuring the ‘sultry vocals of Taasha Coates’, the band will bring their collection of banjos, ukuleles, violins and guitars to delight the audience with their unique blend of folksy/pop style tunes.

Flamenco Guitarist, Gian first came to our attention in 2004 when he entered the Awards and stepped up to the stage to perform with his band the ‘The Heat’. Gian and his band featured sounds straight from Italy and Spain with a unique RnB/pop twist, and flanked by salsa dancers, wowed the audience. It was in 2005 when Gian entered again with three more tracks that he impressed the judges and walked away with the titles of Best Male Vocalist, ABC Music Best Artist and the ABC Music Publishing and APRA Songwriter and Composer Recognition Award. 1233 has the great pleasure of inviting him to return to the stage to demonstrate his brilliant musicianship and passion fuelled performance … as to whether it will once again feature those salsa dancers … you’ll have to come along to find out.

Ergo B Bag came to Newcastle 6 years ago from the planet Norge to party hard, which eventually lead to an album of Party Songs. Yet to be released, he decided the right place for these songs to “spread their things” would be through winning all the categories at the ABC Music Awards. But alas, Ergo B Bag was not allowed to enter all the categories due to the conditions of entry. Instead, the Awards Night organisers decided to invite Ergo B Bag and his All Action All Stars to launch their party hits to the Awards Night audience. Ergo B Bag will definitely set the stage alight … with a fusion of electronica, pop, colour and dance.

How to describe explosive rock band ‘Lover‘? Thumping beats, crunching guitars, soaring vocals and bass riffs that put the entire 80′s decade to shame, Lover is a Brit-influenced rock band with subtle Pop and New Wave qualities. Featuring Graham Seaton (Guitar & Vocals), Roy Mac (Bass) and drummer Joel Redman, the trio have already established a rabid fan-base in hometown Newcastle, as well as far afield as Melbourne. The trio has also managed to secure supports alongside Datarock (Norway), The Valentinos, Something With Numbers and British India.

Emily Jane has been described as an eclectic mix of pop/rock with a soul/funk edge. Emily’s powerful blues/soul voice compliments Steve’s funky, rhythmical grooves. The versatility of the song writing duo has meant their music ranges from eulogistic statements; political and socio-political themes; everyday narratives to meaningless trashy pop. As a live act, one can hear expertise, experience and professionalism in the music combined with humour and enthusiasm to create an atmosphere in which everyone will want to be engulfed.

Introducing Ngariki. His unique brand of blues/funk based rock (with healthy shards of pop thrown in), has put him in high demand during 2006. With a musical background spanning thousands of live dates from Tasmania to Switzerland, he’s seen the inside of venues from Entertainment Centres to the pubs on the corners. From the big halls of Europe to the trendy clubs of Sydney, Ngariki will now perform his gritty ‘Blues and Roots‘ entry ‘Remember‘ to the audience from the stage of the beautiful Civic Theatre Newcastle.

Tickets for the Newcastle Music scene’s night of night’s are ON SALE NOW through Ticketek. Prices are $19.50 for adults and $15.00 for concession on (02) 4929 1977
