Sleight of Hand – Wild Goose Chase Tour

The Wild Goose Chase Tour, named after Sleight of Hand’s legendary roadie ‘Goose’, will take in Adelaide, Sydney, ACT, and Newcastle making these the last shows for us in 2006.

Sleight of Hand will spend the summer in pre-production for an as-yet untitled release pencilled for release mid-2007. They have written over 30 tracks which are being kicked and punched at currently and contacting a number of producers, some of whom have already shown interest on the project.

Sleight of Hand are slated to be the main support for Sweden’s Blindside who will be touring Australia in April ’07. Dates and venues for the Blindside tour are yet to be confirmed. SOH are already confirmed to perform with Blindside, Antiskeptic and a swag of other acts at AGMF in Toowoomba on Friday 6th April, for more information regarding the festival go to

The Wilderness Festival

The Wilderness Society Newcastle is hosting a summer ‘Wilderness Festival’ on the 10th of December to raise awareness and funds for wilderness campaigns.

Showcasing great local bands, campaign and eco-films, speakers, delicious food and eco-market the Wilderness Festival will be a great day for families to gather and learn about local campaigns to preserve our natural heritage.

High Voltage

High VoltageA huge array of local acts will be performing High Voltage this Friday night. This all ages event to be held at The Wheel Shop at Honeysuckle Markets will feature 27 bands across 3 stages.

The gig will be one of the last chances to see Jinn, who have decided to call it a day after two and a half years of performances.

The Common Code will also be launching their self titled EP on the night.

Rusty’s Acoustic Musos Jam

Local music identity Rusty Springfield ran his successful jam sessions at the Royal Hotel Waratah from November 2005 to March 2006. After taking a break for health reasons, Rusty has reinstated the open jam sessions at the Mayfield Hotel as of August of this year.

“Since I’ve started the Mayfield jam there been at least one new act each session as well as the regulars” Rusty said, “I’m always looking for new talent whenever I’m out and about”. For instance only a month ago when Rusty was walking through Newcastle Mall he came across local artists Ben Pritchard and Nigel Wooley who were busking only about 100 metres from one another. Nigel was the winner of the 2003 Christian Rock Eisteddfod Songwriting Competition with his song ‘Fool’. Ben Pritchard is a singer/guitarist/songwriter who has only been performing for about two years.

Rusty SpringfieldEveryone is welcome at the jam nights as they are not just for musos. “The performers need an audience” Rusty explains, “… at one stage at my jam night at the Royal Inn Hotel Waratah we were averaging about one hundred people turning up over a period of over a month and a half”.

With the help of City Music Shop Rusty has given away $400.00 in free studio time. Musos can enter the draw for the free studio time whether they actually perform on the night or not. “I’ve also have put my own money into the free studio times” Rusty explains, “I want to give something back to the music scene”. Local businesses have also provided gift vouchers to give away on jam nights.

Rusty’s jam is held at the Mayfield Hotel 503 Maitland Rd Mayfield is held every second Wednesday at the Mayfield Hotel 503 Maitland Rd Mayfield. The jam starts at 7.00 pm – 11.00 pm and is an all ages event as long as people under the age of 18 are accompanied by an adult and leave the hotel by 9PM.

On Wednesday the 13th of December Rusty will be using his jam night as a Christmas fund raiser for the Samaritans. Entry fee will be either be a gold coin donation or non perishable food items. Then night will be called Jamming For Christmas.

Highroad No. 28 Performing at The Beach Hotel

Highroad No 28Sydney band Highroad No. 28 will be playing their first show ever in Newcastle at the Beach Hotel on Saturday December 16th. The gig is Free entry! In addition to others, joing them will be Newcastle boys Foreshadowed.

After touring most of the country in support of their debut album “Unsteady and Steady State” the band thought it fine time to get down their. “The bands I have heard from Newcastle are awesome, we have made many mates down their, and I am so looking foward to playing their” states band founder Andrew J. Cantwell. Further he states “It will actually be our last show of 2006, so we are going to make it a real winner!”

The Seabellies Win The Newcastle Music Week Industry Showcase

The SeabelliesNovember 2006, eight of the regions finest bands took to the stage at The Civic Theatre Newcastle for the Newcastle Music Week Industry Showcase finals. The bands performed in front of some of the top national industry professionals from Shock Records, Premier Harbour Agency, Universal Music and MGM Distribution.

The Seabellies took out first prize with their energetic and eclectic performance. Frontman Trent Grenell utilised numerous instruments throughout the bands ten minute performance which included several rousing percussion jams. Other finalists in the Industry Showcase competition were The Wireflys, Light Noise and Ngariki.

BenjaluBenjalu were announced as winners of the Let There Be School Rock competition with Short Stack a close second. The other finalists in the Let There Be Shool Rock competition were 40 Footsteps and Red Letter Project.

The winners will share in a pool of prizes valued at over $10,000 that includes:

  • $5,000 JBL PA Package (supplied by A1 Audio).
  • $5,000 worth of Roland, Boss & Edirol (supplied by Muso’s Corner).
  • One hour consultation with Michael Chugg from Chugg Entertainment.
  • An artwork package supplied by EAO and Artbeat), including; Basic logo design, E-brochure and Poster design
  • Free Gold upgrade to service for 12 months (worth $99)
  • a support slot opening for a National or International touring artist from Big Apachee
  • CD Cover design by Design Reaction

The evening was hosted by Brien McVernon from the Retro Rockets and Blind Melon from NEWFM and featured several guest performers including R’n'B performer Jade MacRae, DJ Jay-T and The Last Kinection and Adam Miller.
