Rusty’s Acoustic Musos Jam

Local music identity Rusty Springfield ran his successful jam sessions at the Royal Hotel Waratah from November 2005 to March 2006. After taking a break for health reasons, Rusty has reinstated the open jam sessions at the Mayfield Hotel as of August of this year.

“Since I’ve started the Mayfield jam there been at least one new act each session as well as the regulars” Rusty said, “I’m always looking for new talent whenever I’m out and about”. For instance only a month ago when Rusty was walking through Newcastle Mall he came across local artists Ben Pritchard and Nigel Wooley who were busking only about 100 metres from one another. Nigel was the winner of the 2003 Christian Rock Eisteddfod Songwriting Competition with his song ‘Fool’. Ben Pritchard is a singer/guitarist/songwriter who has only been performing for about two years.

Rusty SpringfieldEveryone is welcome at the jam nights as they are not just for musos. “The performers need an audience” Rusty explains, “… at one stage at my jam night at the Royal Inn Hotel Waratah we were averaging about one hundred people turning up over a period of over a month and a half”.

Musos can enter the draw for the free studio time whether they actually perform on the night or not. “I’ve also have put my own money into the free studio times” Rusty explains, “I want to give something back to the music scene”.
