Newcastle Music Awards 2007

Original Musicians – it’s your time to shine

Enter the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards now!

The 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards return in 2007! Original musicians residing in the Hunter and Central Coast regions will be able to enter their music into the acclaimed competition from May 7 – June 15 2007.

2007 marks the sixth year this project has run in the region to encourage, support and recognise local talent. The project runs across seven months with the major aim to create a sense of community and provide airplay to local artists. This includes the opportunity to receive valuable airplay time and program support across 1233 ABC Newcastle, as well as other ABC Networks such as Triple J, Classic FM and DIG.

The Music Awards has proven to be a quality, key event for the region with close to 2500 entries and 700 tracks added to 1233 ABC Newcastle’s play list since its inception in 2002.

There is a range of genre categories for original musicians to enter their music into and winners will be chosen from each category. Other awards include ABC Music Publishing and APRA Songwriters and Composers Recognition Award ($1000.00 cash prize provided), Hunter Broadcasters’ Choice, Central Coast Broadcasters’ Choice, Listeners’ Choice, Best Female and Male Vocals, Best Young Talent, and the prestigious ABC Music Best Artist Award.

Mike McCluskey, Local Radio Manager Newcastle & Hunter said that the station is thrilled to once again support original musicians in the region.

“Through the Awards, 1233 aims to nurture, build and encourage the huge amount of musical talent within the region. The Music Awards is the only one of its kind in Australia and 1233 is proud to be able to offer this opportunity to our local musicians.

Ngariki - 2006 ABC Artist of the YearNgariki, the winner of the ABC Music Best Artist Award in 2006 is the perfect example of what the Awards are setting out to achieve – he has secured airplay on local and national networks along with securing both a publishing and recording deal through ABC Music Publishing / ABC Music as his prize,” Mike said.

ABC Music Publishing has been integral in the development of the Music Awards and Eloise Nolan, Head of this department is enthusiastic about opportunities for Award entrants.

“So many good opportunities can come out of these annual awards for those who enter – we’re looking to organise a country music writers workshop later this year inviting overseas songwriters, and we’ll be able to include the 2006 ABC Music Publishing/APRA Songwriter, Bob Pigott among the attendees. Other good news for Bob is that two of his songs have been included in ABC Music compilations.

“I also came across a script for a feature telemovie which is being made later this year that relies on strong songs in regard to the main character and storyline. As it happens, the songs from last years ABC Artist of the Year, Ngariki, (who we’ve also signed to ABC Music Publishing), seem to have been tailor-made for this particular film so we’ve been able to present his music to the producers and director and – fingers crossed – it looks like they may indeed provide some of the key moments in this production,” Eloise said.

This year the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards project will culminate in an explosive Awards night at the Civic Theatre Newcastle, Friday 19 October 2007.

Entrants can collect their entry kits from all ABC Shops and centres, or download the kit from www.abc.net.au/newcastle/musicawards.
