Coma Lies

Coma Lies

Coma Lies‘ music fuses hectic riffing with thundering rhythms and epic atmospheric swells. Influenced by bands such as Cult of Luna, The Red Chord and Converge, the band forges their own style of hardcore metal mixed with moments of ambience, resulting in what they describe as “noise“.

Since first forming in 2004, the band has undergone numerous lineup changes, with the only original member being vocalist Liam Christenson. Joining Liam is Andrew Stewart and Joshua Gibson on Guitars, Tynan Waring on Bass and Mitta Norath on Drums.

Coma Lies has been busily promoting their new EP entitled “A Churchwell Killing” which was released in March this year on Skull & Bones Records.

The EP was mixed by James Balderstrom from Studio 454 in Brisbane and mastered by Pelle Hendriksson from Tonteknik Recording in North Sweden. Pelle has also worked with dozens of bands including Cult of Luna and Poison the Well, he also recorded The Shape of Punk to Come by influential Swedish punk band Refused.

In an interview conducted only hours before devastating storms flooded Newcastle, drummer Mitta Norath described the recording process. “For me it was particularly painful,” Mitta recalled, “I had only been in the band for three weeks prior to the recording.” The 4 track EP was recorded over several late night sessions at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at the end of 2006. “The recording schedule really turned us on our heads”, Mitta said.

Fruit and Nut Tour 2007

Frustrated by high prices and poor service from several of the local recording studios, Mitta has recently launched Capulet Studios. The service is primarily aimed at recording EP’s and demos for young bands in the Newcastle hardcore metal/ambient/rock scene at realistic prices.

“The only way to get recognised in this scene is to travel constantly” Mitta points out, “we just want to get on the road and have fun.” Together, Coma Lies have toured almost continuously since late 2006.

The band’s manager, Mitch Beldon, accompanies Coma Lies on all their tours, including their recent event filled trip to Melbourne where managed to write off their van before a separate incident with their trailer left their gear strewn across the road.

During June/July this year, the band will be touring with The Amity Affliction on the ‘Fruit and Nut Tour’. The extensive tour includes 25 gigs in 5 weeks beginning at Club 299 in Brisbane on the 22nd of June. After winding their way along the East Coast the band will perform at a series of shows in the Hunter Region beginning with an all ages show at the Beachcomber Hotel at Toukley on Thursday the 5th of July. Early on the evening of Friday the 6th of July Coma Lies will play alongside a host of local acts at The Crusade, an all ages show at Maitland PCYC, followed later that night at an over 18s show at the Cambridge Hotel. The tour continues South through Melbourne and Adelaide, returning to The Cambridge Hotel on Saturday the 28th and finally winding up the tour at Ormsby House at Taree on Sunday the 29th of July.

Coma LiesComa Lies will be continuing their relentless touring schedule in September this year when they will tour with Every Man For Himself and Adelaide based band The Rivalry. In October they will head to New Zealand to continue touring with Every Man For Himself.

Whilst in Brisbane for some shows in February the band shot a film clip for their song “Paris Wide On” which will be released in the near future. Artistic direction for the clip was provided by Kingdom of Sad Machines.

Coma Lies are also busy writing new material for their full length album, scheduled to be released in early 2008. Meanwhile, their 4 track EP, “A Churchwell Killing” is available from gigs, can be ordered in music stores nationwide, and can also be purchased online from several sites including Chaos.com and CD Online and can also be ordered in most music stores.
