Newcastle Music Week Presents an Open Forum

Now in its fifth year, Newcastle Music Week is moving to fortify the local music scene by holding a forum to discuss the major issues affecting the industry.

The ‘Let’s Get Serious about Local Music’ forum will be the closing event of the A Major Music Expo, held at Newcastle City Hall on November 1.

Music Week event coordinator Christina Sykiotis said the forum aims to unite all those with an interest in the success of the local music scene, from promoters to store owners, from, publicists to venue owners.

“There are a lot of passionate Novocastrians with some great ideas about how to sustain and improve Newcastle’s music scene,” she said.

Ms Sykiotis said the forum will provide a rare opportunity for locals to work towards solving problems such as the lack of performance space, noise restrictions, disunity in the local music community and competing with alternate forms of entertainment such as Foxtel and poker machines.

“There’s a range of challenging issues that could really damage the local industry,” she said.

“This forum will be all about how we can work together and find valuable, tangible solutions.”

The forum will involve a panel of grass-roots locals, industry buffs and national experts. Involvement from everyone is necessary in order to create new initiatives for the local Newcastle Music Scene. The Open Forum will begin at 7:00pm at Newcastle City Hall. The forum is free and everyone is invited to attend.
