And the winner is … The Seabellies. The applause rang loud at the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards last night when unique six-piece Newcastle band ‘The Seabellies’ took home the coveted ABC Music Artist of the Year Award.

The Seabellies‘The Seabellies’ is a band that pushes the boundaries and musical shadow-lands, constantly seeking the new and the exciting, with music that is lush, full of ethereal electronic sounds, strings, metallophones, melodicas, accordions, soaring guitars and multi percussive layering. Named as the 2007 ABC Music ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘The Seabellies’ will receive the prize of a 6 track EP recording and release with ABC Music and will be able to continue to develop their song writing skills with the support of ABC Music Publishing. In addition to winning the overall prize, ‘The Seabellie’s also walked away with the ‘Alternative’ Award.

An enchanting live performance has allowed ‘The Seabellies’ to establish a fine reputation and solid fan base within the Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Brisbane and Melbourne music scenes. This versatile band has also supported artists such as Something For Kate, Augie March and Expatriate, and have featured in lineups including Australia’s very first V Festival alongside artists Beck, Soulwax, Jarvis Cocker, Pet Shop Boys, The Pixies and many more.

Robert Patterson, Head of ABC Music and judge for the ‘Artist of the Year’ Award said of his decision to award ‘The Seabellies’, “We’re thrilled to present ‘The Seabellies’ with the ABC Music Artist of the Year Award. As in previous years, Newcastle continues to be strong in producing exceptional local talent and we feel ‘The Seabellies’ have a fresh and exciting sound with a bright future ahead of them”

The awards night recognised 20 local artists for their efforts and played host to performances by entertaining band ‘Mojo Juju and The Snake Oil Merchants‘, musician Morgan Evans, Aria winner Bob Evans, 2006 ABC Music ‘Artist of the Year’ winner Ngariki, as well as Central Coast performers Nick and Liesl. This event has definitely secured its place among Newcastle’s most anticipated events, and has proven that it is pivotal in the cultivation of emerging and established original talent across the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

2007 is the third year for an Artist to receive the title of ‘ABC Music Publishing & APRA Songwriters and Composers Recognition Award’, and the second time that an artist will receive a $1000.00 cash prize (courtesy of APRA). We are very pleased to announce Grace Turner as the recipient of this prestigious Award. Grace found her own voice as a singer-songwriter and has been playing with a band for the past year who play, in contrast to her own compositions, a mix of psychedelic rock.

Eloise Nolan, Head of ABC Music Publishing and Services played an integral role in establishing the ABC Music Publishing & APRA Songwriters and Composers Recognition Award.

“The 1233 Music Awards are about both recognising talent and creating an opportunity to further develop careers. With this Award, we hope to be able to assist a young writer such as Grace Turner who already shows much promise in both her lyrics and melodies. Grace has a way with words, and if we can help her on her journey, through both the cash grant and also access to our collective expertise so that she can further hone her skills and perfect her craft, then we’ve also achieved what we set out to do by being involved,” Eloise said.
