Newcastle boys, the Street Warriors (brothers Abie and Warwick Wright – aka Predator and Wok) are familiar faces on the Australian hip hop scene and well respected pioneers of Indigenous hip hop.
The brothers are currently promoting their debut album, ‘Unstoppable Force’ which was recently launched by Peter Garrett, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts as part of his Breakthrough Artist initiative at the Carriageworks, Redfern.
Rising from the ashes of groundbreaking Deadlys winning hiphop group Local Knowledge, Street Warriors released their first EP, ‘Real Knows Real’ in 2007. Two of the songs on the EP are featured on the inaugural Gadigal and ABC Music CD, the ‘Making Waves Hip Hop’ album released 14 April, 2009. Their rage anthem Look at Me recently saw them garner Best Band, Best Single and Best Video Awards at the inaugural BUMP Indigenous Hip Hop and Rap awards in Sydney.
The boys have rocked local and international crowds in excess of 10,000 and appearances have included major festivals such as Yabun, Homebake, Stylin’ Up, The Great Escape, and Groovin’ the Moo, The Dreaming and Woodford Folk Festival and a string of NAIDOC dates and support to major artists such as 50 Cent and G Unit.
Street Warriors have built a loyal following around the country on the back of their energy filled live shows, poignant lyrics and their unique musical messaged culminating in nominations for Best Band at the Deadly Awards in 2008 and Single of the Year for Solid Rock in 2009. The song was nominated before its release, such was the buzz from their live launch of the song at the Dreaming in June 2009.
Their debut album ‘Unstoppable Force’ features beats by Melbourne beat maker Unknown & Lewis (Twice as Nice) and original lyrics on all the tracks by Street Warriors, including a special Street Warriors reworking of the classic Goanna hit, ‘Solid Rock’ where the boys combine classic Aussie rock with their Deadly hip hop.
The song features Shane Howard from Goanna playing his famous guitar riff, the original backing singers and a special guest appearance by Shannon Noll on chorus vocals. Shannon also appears in the video, along with famed Torres Strait Island dancer, Albert David. Shot on mother country in Gunnedah, the clip pays homage to the Street Warriors’ ancestor, Red Chief Kangaroo (Cumbo Gunnerah).
Shane Howard, who assisted in the recording of the track, says, “This version is its own animal and I am absolutely honoured and thrilled to be working with the boys on this exciting new version of ‘Solid Rock’.”
The song is currently building a buzz off the back of some special performances with Shane Howard including the Opening Ceremony for the Dreaming Festival at Woodford and rocking a capacity crowd at the Opera House in October to close this year’s Deadly Awards. The video clip won Silver at the Australian Cinematographer’s Awards in the Music Clip category and is currently a Finalist in the International Songwriting Competition’s Music Video category, based out of the U.S.
Adding sonic energy in the mixing is Benjamin Grotto (Aerosmith, Dresden Dolls) and mastering by Tom Coyne at Sterling-Sound, NYC. The album is available in all good retail stores through GoSet/MGM and oline at www.gosetmusic.com.

The Bacardi Band Search is back and is set to make an impression on the Newcastle (and now Central Coast) music scene.

The BBS offers a platform at a quality iconic live music venue for unsigned bands to show what they’ve got.
In 2009, 24 Newcastle bands competed in the BBS at The Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle. They have gone on to play shows with Philadelphia Grand Jury & Red Riders and have just competed recording of their first EP. Two other local bands also reached the grand final in 2009, Wandering Bear, Cota
This year, the BBS will grow an extra limb as we invite Central Coast bands to compete for the first time, allowing the competition to showcase bands from the largest regional music scene in NSW.

Performing the same repertoire of traditional jigs, reels and songs as the popular 5-piece, Erin Trio aims to paint a more subtle picture. With the acoustic approach of guitar, fiddle and voice, the trio strips it all back to reveal the raw simplicity of Irish storytelling. Add the stirring rumble of bodhran and you’ll be taken away along the rocky road to Dublin, or to the rolling mountains of Mourne …
… Thrill to the fiddle,
swoon to the song,
& enjoy the ‘Craic’
with ERIN …
Erin have performed at over 80 venues in the Hunter region in their ten year history, a tribute to their broad appeal.
With member backgrounds as diverse as jazz, folk, heavy metal and classical, Erin transports the Celtic tradition (eg The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, Steeleye Span) into the new millennium, together with a hint of the Irish contemporaries (U2, The Pogues, Sinead O’Connor & The Corrs).
In early 2003 Erin released a self titled album. This was followed up in 2008 with their second release, “Let’s Toss This Salad“, an acoustic album of traditional and jazz pieces performed by the Erin Trio. Let’s Toss This Salad was recorded under the watchful eye of Newcastle based producer Gareth Hudson in late 2007.
Throughout March 2008 Erin travelled around rural NSW and Victoria as part of a successful two week tour to launch the Salad album. On this tour they performed 13 shows in 14 days including numerous appearance at the Port Fairy and Yackandandah Folk Festivals.
The video below shows the band performing the ballad Gypsy Davy at the 2008 Yackandandah Folk Festival. The band undertook this tour as a 5-piece, enlisting the help of Chris Davidson on druns and Todd Johnson on bass.

St Patrick’s Day is coming up soon … Why not JOIN THE FUN!
It’s that time of the year again when the world turns green and people’s hearts turn to the old country, Ireland.
Celtic or not, it’s Irish month and the lead up to St Patrick’s day is always an excuse to have FUN, FUN, FUN, as only the Irish know how.
Radio stations play more Irish music and everyone has an excuse to drink more alcohol mid-week than they could normally manage or be allowed.
Direct from Ireland is a show to delight the family audience. Joe McManus has played to thousands of people in fifteen countries worldwide. Now he brings his Celtic sound to Newcastle for the third year in a row.
Joe sings, plays guitar, banjo, harmonica and the Irish drum (Bodhran).
This creates a unique and touching show that celebrates the special sounds and tales of Ireland.
With comparisons to Irish great, Christy Moore, Joe brings you the complete Irish experience of great music mixed in with a great sense of humour. Delivering such an enjoyable show is a pleasure for Joe.
When asked why he loves the show, he replied, “I get to pretend that I’m back in Ireland for 2 hours!”
So big, small, old or young, wherever you are from, you get a chance to be crazier, laugh more, to drown the shamrock and sing loud. Here is your chance to celebrate everything Irish with the “Irish Busker Show”.
