Pop Rocks

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Pop Rock Pop Rocks is set to fill all your audio dietary requirements. With four hours of explosive tunes and dancing on Saturday, 19th of June at the Great Northern Hotel.

Four of the region’s most dynamic artists have been packed together for a night of snap, crackle and pop at the Great Northern’s Boiler Bar. The evening is presented by Bassline Projects (formerly known as Fehret Projects and Promotions).

Box Set – The last time these cats visited The GNH they had the whole room moving with their upbeat retro funk stylings … from the shy reserved toe-tappers at the back to the move-busters banging it out at the front!

The Shivering Indies – Powered by the songwriting of Ben Bradly and Jack Waterson, The Shivering Indies have shown what can happen when a hopeless romantic and mad scientist mix the melodic charisma of The Motion City Soundtrack with the raw power of bands like Gyroscope and Taking Back Sunday … Certainly an explosive reaction!

Alice vs. Everything – Infectious Choruses, brutal breakdowns, bitchin’ guitar licks, counter vocal melodies, crazy song structures, get your dance on synth parts, and stunning good looks…what more could you ask for?

Scott Forbes will join the bands with a solo performance.

Matt CorbyHaving spent the last 9 months writing and recording in London, Melbourne and Sydney, and playing live shows across Australia and London, local Sydney singer/songwriter Matt Corby is releasing his first new material since his debut EP ‘Song For …’ in 2009.

My False is a stomping folk anthem recorded in Melbourne with producer Dann Hume. Lighthome, recorded in London late last year, is a stunningly stark ode to the draw of home. In February, Lighthome was featured on the critically acclaimed UK Communion compilation, brainchild of Mumford and Sons Ben Lovett.

Both tracks are available online now via Matt’s website.

2009 was an incredible year for Matt. He released his critically acclaimed debut EP ‘Song For …’, signed a publishing deal out of the UK with industry giant BMG and has signed a record deal with independent UK based label Communion.

Honk, Stomp, Aussie Swamp Music

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

8 Ball AitkenFNQ’s best loved banana picker (turned full time guitar picker) 8 Ball Aitken is touring with his award winning album “Rebel With A Cause”. His tour will pass through the Hunter region this month with a performance at the Northern Star Hotel on June 11.

8 Ball Aitken is authentic – a real deal character who rattles the roof, stomps the planks, and gets his audiences whooping and hollering along in a frenzy of pure exuberance. He plays a sizzling hot blend of original blues, roots & country music. Coming from a farming community in Far North Queensland, 8 Ball Aitken is the oldest son of an impoverished family of twelve children. 8 Ball spent his adolescence on a banana plantation, living in a rough tobacco shed with resident rats, bats, snakes and spiders as his sleeping companions.

He started work as a farm labourer aged fifteen, doing back-breakingly hard work on the mango and banana plantations of the Atherton Tablelands – a man’s work for a boy’s pay. A life changing conversation with an Aboriginal elder, who told him he should pursue a career in music, convinced 8 Ball to pack his bags, grab his guitar and leave the farm to meet his destiny.

8 Ball won a 2009 Q Song Award for his song Outback Booty Call. Another song, Yellow Moon, has won the EMI Music Blues & Roots Song of the Year at the Q Song Awards. His singles Cyclone Country and Hands on Top of the Wheel have both been top 10 country hits around Australia in 2008/2009.

Cyclone Country earned 8 Ball a 2009 Golden Guitar nomination. The first single Cowboy Movie (from Rebel with a Cause) was nominated for the 2009 APRA Blues & Roots Song of the Year, and has received airplay in twenty-six countries, including charting in the European Country Music Top 40.

8 Ball has taken his unique blues and roots sound to festivals and clubs across the world, including Europe, Japan, USA and Canada including Canadian Music Week 2009 and the Stan Rogers Festival. He’s toured Japan four times, where he headlined the popular Rokko Sun Music Festival. He has played a string of dates in Singapore, the UK (including a live appearance on the BBC), Poland, Sweden, Denmark & Norway. But for now at least, he’s back home, and ready to treat Novocastrians to his own unique blend of storytelling:

Grinspoon ‘Six To Midnight’ Tour

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Overwhelmed by demand to play shows in regional areas, Aussie rockers Grinspoon announce an extensive new run of new dates for their Six To Midnight Tour and luckily Newcastle has been included in the run! Newcastle Leagues Club’s Level One has been selected as the venue and it no doubt ring in another ‘sell out” when Grinspoon come to play, what for them is an intimate room.

GrinspoonWith the tour starting on the 29th of July in Tasmania the show will see the lads weave their way through the ACT, regional New South Wales and Victoria before hitting the last stretch of the tour in South Australia. The hugely successful first leg of the tour in March, saw the band playing at “Sold-Out” venues like The Enmore Theatre and HiFi Bar in Melbourne to a very energetic crowds. Grinspoon are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with their regional fans with their amazing show and unique support line-up.

Grinspoon’s sixth studio album Six To Midnight has received a tremendous response so far, debuting at #4 in the ARIA charts and winning mountains of praise from fans and reviewers alike. The first two singles Comeback and Summer, and the latest single Premonitions have received huge reactions, gaining high rotation on most major TV & radio stations.

Legendary US producer Rick Will (Johnny Cash, No Doubt, Nine In Nails) was behind the albums’ production & mixing duties, and has delivered one of Grinspoon’s finest records to date. The band returned to their spiritual home town of Byron Bay to record the album, which helped them capture their affinity for a good live hard rock record, something the band really wanted to achieve.

Grinspoon’s return to the live last year saw them play to a wild and overflowing main stage at the Splendour In The Grass festival, which went down as one of the band’s most memorable gigs to date. A sold out launch tour on the east coast in September soon followed, with Six To Midnight released at the same time, and then a huge national tour in early 2010 saw the band take in some of the biggest venues in capital cities across the country. Their loyal army of fans received their first taste of the record in a live setting, and judging by the reaction so far, it’s one of their best yet.

In celebration of all these great things, Grinspoon have decided to do what they do best and hit the road once again, this time taking in regional venues across New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia. Come and see why Grinspoon have been proclaimed one of Australia’s premier live acts, time and time again.

Karnivool – New Day Tour

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

KarnivoolOnce again, KARNIVOOL, Perth’s hugely successful purveyors of heavy rock prove their popularity and status on the live music scene! With 8 shows on their national tour sold out the band is pleased to announce final extra shows to cope with demand for the New Day tour – their last national headline Australian tour for their Sound Awake album.

KARNIVOOL are currently in the US on the tail end of a mammoth 7 week international tour which has spanned the breadth of the globe. Following their triumphant afternoon slot on the Big Day Out main stage earlier this year the band jetted off to Helsinki to start a 12 date European headlining tour which saw them sell out rooms in Germany and the UK (including the legendary London rock venue The Garage), eat reindeer in Finland, smash through the Baltic Sea on an icebreaker, set new records for what could fit in a splitter van and see more ice and snow than a 5 piece from Perth could imagine existed. Check out some of the action from the European leg of the tour here …

The morning after their sold out London show the band took off to Texas where they crammed 6 shows into 4 days at the SXSW festival before starting their 20 date co-headlining tour with Dallas TX spazz rockers Fair to Midland. Highlights thus far include surviving a tyre blowout in North Carolina, taking to the stage at the sold out 700 cap Gramercy Theatre in New York City and being more than a little disturbed by the antics of the Jackass cast in Philadelphia.

Commenting from Toronto, guitarist Drew Goddard said, “Six weeks and counting – life on the road has been treating us well. We’ve been clocking up some serious mileage over Europe and the US, playing cracker shows and meeting awesome people, many who have travelled from all over (Poland, Hungary, Greece and of course Tampa!) to come see us. Many boozy nights and too many hung-over breakfasts at Waffle House to count. As amazing as this has been, there’s nothing like the feeling of coming back to our island home. Come party with us! It’s been too long!”

The band’s Sound Awake album has already achieved gold status in Australia and is well on its way towards platinum sales. It has been released in 13 other territories across the globe, the media reaction has been universally positive with KARNIVOOL gaining exposure in some iconic international press including Kerrang, Classic Rock, MTV, Radio 1 and the Wall St Journal.

Joining Karnivool on the night will be the genre defying MM9.

Sydney based MM9 have been storming stages for the past decade uniquely combining elements of heavy rock and electro, littered with guitar-driven melodies will join KARNIVOOL on their New Day tour as the main support act. MM9 is a band whose versatility is matched only by the sheer potency of their stage presence. While maintaining a tireless schedule of touring throughout 2008/2009, MM9 finally released their highly anticipated first full length album ‘The Air Between’ in March. Constantly looking forward, always evolving, MM9 are a band to listen to, witness, and lose yourself in and KARNIVOOL are pleased to invite them on the road in June/July this year.

In other incredible news for one of our biggest heavy music exports KARNIVOOL have been announced on the Sonisphere Festival in the UK. Taking place at Knebworth from Friday July 30th, KARNIVOOL will perform on Sunday August 1st . This is a landmark international performance for the Perth band who will be performing alongside such monstrous heavy weights as Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Alice Cooper, Pendulum, Placebo, the iconic Iggy and The Stooges, Motley Crue, Slayer and more!

Something To Crow About

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

CrowCROW are lead by the dual song writing talents of Peter Fenton and Peter Archer. Throughout the 90s they produced mesmeric and powerful albums such as ‘My Kind Of Pain’, ‘Li-Lo-Ing’ and the curtain caller ‘Play With Love’.

CROW are now re-formed as the original line-up with bassist Jim Woff and drummer John Fenton rounding out the quartet.

The new CROW album ‘Arcane’ (their first with the original line-up since the fabled Steve Albini helmed ‘My Kind Of Pain’ in ’93) was mixed by Midnight Oil’s Jim Moginie at Oceanic Studios and is scheduled for release on Nonzero Records in Autumn 2010.

Early ’010 found CROW visiting Melbourne for only the second time this century, playing at the Applecore Festival and the Espy (double-billing with Dave McCormack & the Polaroids).

To provide fans with a taste of the upcoming record, the first single off ‘Arcane’ – Ghost At The Crossroads is now available for streaming via the CROW MySpace page. You can check out the first review of the single via MessandNoise.com.

Out Of The Box

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Box SetBOX SET is a dance music-based collaboration that fuses and uses live and electronic instruments, beats, rhymes and the kitchen sink. By focusing on improvisation rather than sequencing the band strives to keep all shows fresh and driven by the dance floor. Every show becomes a once only.

All three members have deep roots and experience in a wide variety of dance music styles and outfits including highly respected national touring and recording artists Pre Shrunk and On Inc as well local dance floor favourites Pow Wow and Fishfry.

BOX SET has been secretly shaping up a one hundred minute production with a series of live warm up shows throughout the region and everyone feels it’s about time to let the cat out the bag.

As one sweaty disorientated patron quipped recently after a night on the vinyl tiles under a rotating mirror ball sky, “Elements of pure funk, house, techno, hip hop, dub and soul are thrown into a blender, sliced and diced, shaped in to a papier-mâché mirror ball and kicked skywards towards a back alley, its up to BOX SET and the party people to keep that mirror ball intact and the dream alive”.

The band members include:

Catch Box Set performing at the Wickham Park Hotel, Saturday June 5th.

Irish Songwriter John Spillane Performing in Newcastle

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

John Spillane“… some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.” Earle Hitchner, premier writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal.

Twice winner of the Meteor Award in the best folk/trad category, John Spillane has toured the country and the world spreading joy with a mix of melodic tunes, entertaining stories and poetic lyrics. Described as ‘one of the truest Irish voices of his generation’ by Irish Music Magazine, Spillane truly embodies the Celtic spirit. Spillane has recently released his first ‘best of’ album ‘So Far So Good, Like’. This compiles some of his greatest works, from the memorable anthems of ‘The Dance of the Cherry Trees’ and ‘Dunnes Stores Girl’ to songs from ‘The Gaelic Hit Factory’, making 2009 a stellar year for the man with boundless enthusiasm for his craft.

Last Christmas John also released his follow up to double platinum selling album, ‘Irish Songs We Learned at School’ with a new collection, ‘More Irish Songs We Learned at School’. This new collection features great Irish music legends, Christy Moore and Sean O Se and will have everyone singing the songs of their youth. Christy Moore has recorded one of John’s songs ‘Gortatagort’, to be included on his forthcoming album and which Christy performed live on the TV show, Other Voices. Moore says, “One of the great songwriters to emerge in the last 10 years is John Spillane”.

It is doubtful that 2010 will be any different from last year! What is certain though, is that there won’t be a dry eye in the house after John has whisked you off on a journey with his emotive tunes and playful and dynamic Cork wit.

Jazz in the Vines celebrates 18 years in the Hunter Valley

One of the longest running annual music festivals in the Hunter Valley, Jazz in the Vines, is back for it’s 18th year. On Saturday October 30, Jazz fans of all ages will descend on Pokolbin for one of the biggest days on the Hunters social calendar.

With a sensational line up including Kate Ceberano, the James Morrison Big Band featuring the unmistakable voice of Doug Parkinson, guitar genius Bruce Mathiske, The Adrian Cunningham Quartet and Dojo Cuts … their 18th birthday bash is one not to be missed.

Jazz In The VinesKate Ceberano will be joining the festival for the first time this year. Kate has been Australia’s sweetheart since the ’80s. As part of the group I’m Talking, Kate received the Best Female Vocalist 1985 ARIA Awards. The Filipino/American/Australian singer then branched out with a solo album, and the first single Bedroom Eyes, made her a star. Ceberano also showed off her dancing prowess by winning Seven Network’s 2007 Dancing with the Stars competition and was also a contestant on It Takes Two. Twenty-seven years into her career, the pop star has released 18 albums, sold over a million records in Australia and achieved six platinum albums and four gold records.

When you think about Jazz music in Australia the first name that comes to mind is James Morrison. James is a regular at Jazz in the Vines, 2010 making his ninth appearance on or stage. Always delivering something different, this visit Morrison will bring fans a large scale Motown show featuring the unmistakable voice of Doug Parkinson. Including four vocalists, as part of an 12-piece band, including a horn section led by virtuoso trumpeter Morrison this performance will have everyone on their feet. Morrison remembers Motown as the music of his youth. Even as a jazz fan, he recalls being surrounded by the music of Stevie Wonder. He said he had always included a Motown number or two in his jazz shows, which he and the crowd enjoyed enough to encourage the development of a full Motown show.

The Adrian Cunningham Quartet is one of Australia’s most outstanding jazz groups. In the last six years, the quartet has recorded three critically acclaimed albums They were nominated for two MO Awards, and have performed at major jazz festivals around Australia. The dynamic and passionate performance of these four musicians who are at the top of their game has produced one of the most exciting jazz groups to emerge from Sydney. It has been said that Adrian makes playing the Alto/Tenor Saxophones and Clarinet look as easy as brushing your teeth.

Jazz In The VinesDojo Cuts are THE Australian funk act to keep your eyes on. Fronted by Roxie Ray, the band’s grooves and Motown throwbacks will be sure to get them up there with the Dap Kings, New Mastersounds and our own Bamboos. The explosive debut album from the Sydney band was released in April pulls no audio punches on its way to delivering a string of killer blows. Everything is raw, live and loud in the world of DOJO CUTS and they can’t wait to play tracks from the album to a festival crowd. The deepest grooves underpin their distinctive sound while the powerful vocals of Roxie Ray front and center turn up the heat and mercilessly knock you into next week.

This year Jazz will be host to a plethora of festival vibrance with various market stalls, local wine makers, restaurants and produce in the spacious, laid back setting the Jazz in the Vines has made it’s trademark.
