Band Search shows Newcastle’s live music scene is alive and well

Over the last 12 weeks, more than 50 local bands have taken the stage at The Cambridge Hotel to do battle as part of the Bacardi Band Search.

Roxy Returns To The Kent Hotel

Roxy The Piano ManFor 7 years ROXY held the fort at the Kent Piano Bar ‘Level One’ filling a hole in the market by creating a ‘Piano-bar Nightclub’ that proved to be a great success with standing room only crowds of all ages. These were the people who wanted a night club experience, with live music as well as up to the minute top 40 dancing in breaks that was a contrast to ROXY’S retro ‘By Request format, and in a place where they felt safe and secure.

Word got around and eventually ROXY was approached to perform for world leading Royal Caribbean Cruises. So in March 2010 ROXY said goodbye to his Kent residency and headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico in Central America, where for the past 4 months he has topped the ratings, right across the board, repeating history as he did in the 1990′s with P&O Cruises and the ill fated
Achilles Lauro.

ROXY was so well received by American audiences that he has been offered lucrative contracts both on land in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Los Vegas as well as the lead role in a production show on another Royal Caribbean super liner.

However, after 110 consecutive shows abroad he has decided to come back home for some well needed rest.

He will commence at the Kent Hotel on August 20th.

ROXY says “It was hard to leave the Kent and even harder for Phil Tweed and Damo to fill these shoes in my absence, but from what I have heard, they have done an amazing job, and I appreciate them stepping aside to let me have another bash at the old grand piano at the Kent, after all, old habits die hard, and I really miss the audiences there and look forward to catching up with everyone again soon!”

  • Who: ROXY
  • Where: Kent Hotel
  • When: Friday 20th August

    Whitley Announces Final Tour

WhitleyMelbourne songwriter Whitley is gearing up for what will be his final tour ever. In the five years since he came onto the scene he’s completed countless tours to fans all over the country and the world.

The young songwriter is setting sail for greener pastures and relocating to Europe where he plans to explore new kinds of music in a new environment. ‘It’s been a great time playing all this music, but it’s time for me to pack it in here, there’s only so many times you can play around the same venues and expect to be stimulated and inspired. I mean, when you’re sitting in a band room and realize you’ve read and memorized 48% of the toilet’s graffiti in every venue, you know it’s time to explore new horizons…I know there could be a whole new world of toilet graffiti out there, new penis drawings that I can’t even conceive of in my feeble mind right now, with swearing in a completely foreign language.’

The word from the Whitley camp is that there will be songs from both releases played in a huge double set. ‘The first half will be solo, quiet songs … then I’ll bring on the band for the finale. I’m actually really excited. I can’t say that I have felt like that in a while, but I’m sure that this will be something to remember for us and hopefully the punters as well.’

Whitley’s last tour will take him around Australia in August with Australia’s favourite shoegaze band, Seagull.

    Tim and Jean

To say there is an ‘industry buzz’ about Tim & Jean would be an understatement. In the space of the few short months these two young Australians have gone from obscurity to being courted by international record labels.

Tim & JeanTim and Jean have been playing in bands since they were very young; Jean’s just turned 16 and Tim is a couple of years older. Over the past couple of years they would occasionally see each other at a gig. Then a few months ago they bumped into each other at a local train station and decided they should try jamming some music together.

The ideas came together very quickly and it wasn’t long before they decided to put up rough demos of two tracks, “Come around” and “Like what” on their myspace. These tracks immediately sparked the interest of labels, DJs and music minded people around the globe.

They then hit the national airwaves of Australia courtesy of Triple J when they became one of the station’s “unearthed” finalists and later listed as part of Triple J’s “Next Crop” of acts most likely to succeed in 2010. “Come around” has also been listed as “one of the most popular emerging songs in the world” on We are Hunted Web site.

Tim and Jean’s sound is a mix of both of their combined musical influences and tastes; creating a synth heavy sound, with an undercurrent indie pop influence. Tim who has a background in Jazz plays keyboards and sings while Jean who started life as a guitar player looks after Keyboards and guitars.

They’ve already generated huge interest from major labels in America, UK and Australia.

Atlantic and Elektra records in America recently flew Tim and Jean out to play showcases in LA and New York.

Their first gig was performing at the sell out Parklife Festival. Follow those with slots on The Laneway Festival in Perth, Field Day Festival in Sydney, supporting Moby in Melbourne and Sydney and Future Sound of Music Festival in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. And now a tour alongside Art Vs Science is sure to raise their profile even more…

    Newcastle Singer-Songwriter Wows UK

Newcastle-based singer-songwriter Amy Vee has returned from her whistle-stop tour of the UK in high spirits.

Amy Vee recently returned from wowing UK audiences with 14 shows across England and Scotland during the month of June.

Amy Vee LiveThe tour follows the Newcastle launch of Amy’s EP Sleeping Dogs Lie, which she has been celebrating over the last 6-8 months with tours encompassing Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and many places in between.

Her UK stint included several notable shows in London, including the infamous Troubadour Club, which in the past has been graced by folk legends such as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

“I was overwhelmed by the positive response from UK audiences. The vibe there is pretty amazing. Even in the midst of World Cup fever there was still a really strong support and appreciation,” said Vee.

On leaving London, Vee travelled north, playing shows in Blackburn, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The singer’s journey then led to the historic university town of Cambridge and onto the nearby ancient village of Arrington, before heading back for more performances in the capital.

The tour ended with Vee heading to the far south-eastern tip of the country, mystical Cornwall, for a beachside performance in Porthtowan. The sun set over the ocean was a reminder of home and provided the perfect backdrop to her final show.

Vee clocked more than 3000kms during her solo road trip, in which she managed to visit relatives in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and glimpse the legendary Stonehenge monument.

“The roads in the UK are great and it’s easy to take in the beautiful countryside along the way,” said Vee.

“It was nice to get out of London and experience the ‘real’ England and I would like to go back and perform again, hopefully at a few of the numerous festivals that it is so famous for.

“The live scene is really thriving over there and I think Aussie performers feel quite welcome – they UK audiences really know how to appreciate a good live performance.”

Glad to be back, Vee’s hometown performances will now continue with upcoming gigs scheduled at Queen’s Wharf Brewery on Thursday 5 August and Lizottes Newcastle on Wednesday 18 August before Vee heads off to Northern NSW and QLD for a brief run of shows.
